Dr. Herms is obviously very knowledgeable in the subject matter. He sometimes assumes more knowledge of Israel's history in his listeners and makes unsupported statements. Lesson 3 was particularly off-putting for me when he said Luther and Calvin used the wrong interpretation of the Jewish relationship to Torah. My takeaway from Lesson 3 was that Jesus' life and death were unnecessary. Yet in Lesson 4 Dr. Herms quotes Paul in in Galatians 2:19-20 "...that if justification came by the Law, Christ would have died for nothing…” . For me Lesson 3 cannot stand on its own, there must be an introductory lesson on the pros and cons of E.P. Sanders' "new perspective" on Paul. I conclude that Dr. Herms agrees with Sanders' "new perspective" in Lesson 3 but then he quotes Gal 2:19-20 in Lesson 4. Overall I gained some new insights into Paul's theology.
